8:02 pm
and dave johnson want dio show the heck with the bar.. david hernandez phas bethat on eld, that is hit hard by airston and good-bye home run. >> jim: the one thing about scott hairston, you could see, 14th this year, he got traded over from the diamondbacks where -- actually the padres where he had 10 home runs. you hang a breaking ball, that's the only thing that david hernandez has really not commanded well tonight. that's your room service hanging curveball. it just kind of hovers there, doesn't break, u toest up.
8:03 pm
>> gary: that will be the 8th home run surrendered by hernandez on the season. five of those to right-handers. here is cust. going for another one. cust flied out to left field his first time up. >> jim: you want to use all yo pitches, but you don't want to hang that curveball because it really does speed up the bat. >> gary: the s have now surrendered 142 home runs on the season, leading the american league in that department. >> jim: and they've only hit 109. that's one of the problems. just in general the power numbers down, slugging along with it. >> gary: orioles have been outscored now almost by 100 runs. >> jim: you would like to think that would change when the
8:04 pm
starting staff gets more maturity. i think you always have to, especially when you're a young guy, you have to make a decision, what do i -- what am i doing best that night. that's what everybody talked about david hernandez, he's got an explosive fastball, it's one of those fastballs that good velocity, but it gets on the hitter a lot quicker. >> gary: bases cleared here, hit number 3 for the a's on the homer to tie the ballgame up at 1-1. hernandez got through the two best offensive innings that the a's have, and in the fourth hairston delivers the lead-off homer to tie the game up, line shot to left. cust will draw the first walk
8:05 pm
of the ballgame. on friday, they're going to be signing autographs, 5:30 to 6:30 here at camden yards. you can relive your memories from one of the o's most memorable teams. that's going to be on friday, the 20th anniversary of the 89 ball club. and it's fireworks night and student night, so all kinds of reasons to be here. here is kurt suzuki who grounded out his first time up. and suzuki will take the pitch. he's got 66, he's now tied for fifth in the league in free
8:06 pm
passes. >> jim: we saw an 0-2 hit-and- run. so bob geren, he'll start runners. >> gary: jones has that lined up. suzuki retired. one away. >> jim: that way, i saw jack today. he played with the orioles a brief time, home run guy. i said you look faster. he was talking to clubhouse guy butch reynolds. he goes, do you hear, butch. he said i was fast. no, no, i didn't say you were fast. i said you were faster. doesn't mean you were fast. >> gary: there's a difference. >> gary: one down here. everidge struck out his first time up. he has that cust cut. came up from triple-a on july 28th. he's started each of the 15
8:07 pm
games since. he was rolling in the minors, .338, 17 homers and 85 rbi's in 98 games. combined aa, triple-a. >> jim: bob geren said it was pretty simple. we had injuries. why not bring him up. and he was hitting for power. >> gary: thunder bumpers are rolling in. that ball will end up out of play. >> jim: they keep throwing change-ups. the reason for that is, again, the home run on a curveball, the fastball has been 93 to 94, and his change-up is like a guy that doesn't have good stuff.
8:08 pm
87 miles per hour. so he makes a mistake. he will speed up the bat. if you hang a change-up. >> gary: a check swing and he got him. that is strikeout number four for hernandez. take a look at the numbers for david as the game goes along. he got through innings one and two, after he gets through the first two, the e.r.a. drops down, the average though is up. but he also doesn't surrender as many walks. >> jim: he's a big, strong kid. you can stay around the knees and then pitch up and out of the strike zone when you get ahead. great chance of having a lot of success.
8:09 pm
>> gary: that will be in the dirt. suzuki able to hang on to that one. holds the runner on at first. >> gary: and ground ball towards first, back-handed, a little underhand flip. one run in on one hit. boston lr continues to be a very special beer. six weeks after jim started the business it took the best beer in america award. nobody had tried an american beer that had that kind of flavor. twenty years off, jim is still obsessed with boston lager. sam adams lager continues to win medals all over the world. that's pretty cool. what is it to lead?

8:11 pm
 >> gary: this date in history 1929, the babe had his 500th home run. the first one to do that. what is maybe even more amazing, at that time look at the second man on the list, cy williams, he had 237. >> jim: that's why i think everybody seems to at least the connens us is that babe ruth, he changed the way the game was. didn't he hit more home runs than all the other teams? >> gary: he outhit every team. >> jim: he was hitting home runs when nobody else was. >> gary: in those enormous ballparks. >> jim: there was no performance-enhancing drugs
8:12 pm
except for beer and hot dogs. >> gary: which apparently worked. >> jim: strike three called, and standing there waiting is reimold wondering what just happened. cahill, the k. >> jim: it caught the edge. gibson is going to tear a rotator cuff. really, you could hurt yourself calling guys out. >> gary: nolan just stood there for a minute. a check swing by luke scott, grounded out. one of thees oakland coaches, i won't say who because we didn't discuss it, has been hit by lightning. we were talking about last night before the game, he was saying, i got off that field so fast. ground ball towards second base, back-handed, ellis, nice
8:13 pm
play. he was on a golf course at the time, he and his son, and a side bolt of lightning went right across the top of his head, hit him and his son, decked them both, got up, touched the top of his head, it was like it was on fire, he said, and also took his son down. neither of them injured. but he said i'll tell you one thing, when there's thunder around and i hear it, i'm out of here. i am out of here. don't need that. melvin mora. mora grounded out but got an rbi his first time up, with the now infamous shot off the bottom of the bat. that will be outside. >> jim: that's a novel way to use the lumber.
8:14 pm
 >> jim: well, are you letti him hit right here? yep. should you have let him hit? i think with chad moeller on deck, you probably do. >> jim: i agree. our 737s fly to over 65 cities across the country every day. pa announcer: final boarding call... all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 mph... almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. grab your bag . it's on™west so our low fares stay low. 8:16 pm
 >> gary: another great day the orioles summer camp today. matt wieters was on hand to do some coaching, and chris was there, and met with the kids, signed some autographs. and just generally had a good time for the o's and for the youngsters. the orioles summer camp at parks schools taking place today. there goes mark ellis. >> jim: just a curveball that gets away. of course he lined out on the same pitch that hung the last time. they come back with another one. if we were in oakland, everybody makes a big deal out of it. >> gary: that's why you throw inside. it either makes guys angry or scared, one or the other. and not many get scared at this level, so they get angry. so you get a chance to get them to swing at a pitch they might
8:17 pm
not otherwise swing at. one run on five hits and an error for the orioles. hairston has the home run in the fourth inning that tied it up after reimold scored on a melvin mora ground out. ellis will take the pitch up high and it goes to 2-2. >> jim: i think some of the intriguing numbers are those of david hernandez coming in this game. righties hit him better than lefties. he's moved over, the angles is better. >> gary: the right-handers .300. >> jim: not a whole lot of difference. five home runs to righties and three to lefties. >> gary: there's nothing wrong with knock ago player down in the batter's box in baseball. but how seldom it is seen in
8:18 pm
this day and age. i'm not talking about head- hunting, but taking a guy down with a good inside pitch. >> jim: or down around the thighs. most of these guys throw two -- three two seam fastballs. you don't want to put them on. i think nowadays the way guys kind of dive, if you pitch up and in, you're going to hit them. if you move their feet, one of the better hitters i saw was rafael palmeiro. i used to try to make him dance. >> gary: delivery down the line, hit hard, it is a foul ball. you try to break the rhythm of hitters. if you can get them moving a little bit in the batter's box, don't, if you're comfortable, you will hit at this level. >> jim: last night, jeremy guthrie in less than five innings gives up 11 hits. the best guy he faced was rajai
8:19 pm
davis who has been red-hot, almost hit him in the rib cage, then threw the best slider, hit about a four foot ground ball in front of home plate. >> gary: hernandez gets his fifth strikeout of the ballgame. >> jim: this is 86. the change of speed. the guy rips your fastball down the line. not where you really want to throw it. but it's certainly effective to a guy that was 5 for 5 last night. >> gary: and that one is going to be popped up in the air. pennington to jones. and there are two down here in the fifth inning. >> jim: i think the one thing that david hernandez has done, they've established the fact that he will throw breaking balls and he will throw change-
8:20 pm
ups. even though his fastball is probably his best pitch. he's gotten hurt on the one hanging curveball to scott hairston, but you can't go up there looking for one pitch. >> gary: that one in the air to right center field, hit hard, jones going back, looking up and that ball is gone, good-bye home run for adam kennedy. kennedy gives the a's a 2-1 lead. adam kennedy now has a nine- game hit streak against the orioles in which he's driven in eight runs and is hitting over .380. >> jim: this is 94, and until you get the two strikes, you can look outside middle. that's exactly what he did. we talked about it last night, three home runs. part of that world championship angels team back in 2002.
8:21 pm
he's a veteran hitter that understands, that's his third time up. he just looked in a certain area. he just went out and got it. >> gary: for the first time in the ballgame, it is a 2-1 lead. two homers surrendered by hernandez in the ballgame tonight. by the way, with that fifth strikeout that david hernandez has, that's new high for him. four a couple of times on the season had been his high. davis has doubled and grounded out. and a grounder to third base, melvin mora circles, knowing he's going gun it and does to get the out.
8:22 pm
8:23 pm
don't miss this sunday, august 16, the right side foundation will hold their first annual 5k and one mile host walk. christina, that is fun event for everybody. first tell me about the details of the event. can people sign up now or can they walk up to the event and sign up? >> absolutely, they can do both. people can sign up now, or they can sign up the day of the race, sign up will begin at 4:30 at patterson park with the race beginning at 6:00 pm. >> so it is this sunday, august 16, we didn't say it's at patterson park in the middle of canton. so a fun place to be. walkers and runners with both participate, right? >> absolutely, we're going to have a one mile fun walk for
8:24 pm
children and anybody who doesn't want to run the 5k. it will be a great family day, a lot of games, a lot of fun things. we are going to have a special appearance by the orioles bird so it will just be a great family oriented day. >> i know the proceeds do support children throughout the state of maryland, different children's charities. to sign up how much does it cost? i know awards are given out, t- shirts. >> the first 500 people that sign up are going to have a free underarmor t-shirt that is absolutely awesome, and there will be prizes given out to the top three finishers of the 5k along with the top three finishers in each age group, there will be food, drinks, it's $30 to sign up and that's for both the run and the walk. >> so it supports the right side foundations. what website again to sign up and get more information? >> right side foundation.org and there will be a link there to get you to charm city run
8:25 pm
where people can sign up. >> nick will be there? >> nick will be walking. >> that's why the fans are showing up. we appreciate it. >> thanks, amber. >> that will be coming up, we hope you'll participate in that. you saw chad moeller get a base hit off the glove of cahill. that's for the right side foundation. runner goes, ground ball, right behind him for a base hit. moeller will head over to third base. sweeney will get it in and izturis comes through and the 8 and 9 hitters are on covering the corners with nobody out. >> jim: trevor cahill unable to handle the moeller comebacker so it goes off his glove into left. you can see pennington
8:26 pm
covering. izturis, he looks at the first baseman and then just pounds it. he's going go, go. chad moeller didn't really pick up the ball because he was running on the play. i can't imagine he heard cesar izturis, but he gets all the way to third. there's your go-ahead run. >> gary: now brian roberts has a 2 for 2 ballgame. brian came in with only three hits against the a's on the season, in the previous four games. he's already got two added in this one. brian hitting .293 with runners in scoring position. the orioles down a run. they've outhit the a's 7-4. that will be taken inside for a ball. roberts has the orioles extra- base hit so far, a double in the third. then he was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball with
8:27 pm
the infield drawn in. >> jim: they play very shallow. >> gary: down to first and base hit rbi, izturis on his way to third. the orioles have tied this ballgame right back up at 2 and an rbi hit by roberts who is 3 for 3. here's your speed factor. >> jim: very rarely do you go from first to third at camden yards. here's your sinker. good throw by sweeney. moeller is going to make it 2- 2. >> jim: the orioles doing a nice job of adjusting. he's lost three in a row, he's only won one out of his last seven appearances. this is an opportunity. before you get into the better part of your bullpen, and they have a good one, to do some
8:28 pm
damage. >> gary: cahill appeared against the orioles in a 9-4 win. he got the win. the orioles have gotten to him tonight for the two runs on eight hits already. here's adam jones who has hit into a double play and a fielder's choice. nobody out. jones will wait on the look, and look, and no throw. orioles finally able to pick up a base hit with a runner in scoring position. outside, the count goes to 2-0.
8:29 pm
jones gets the rbi chance here. >> jim: adam very solid in that respect all year long. that average still at .33 coming into tonight's game. >> gary: taken for a strike in order to let roberts get the stolen base. brian is 2 for 2 in stolen bases tonight. >> jim: there goes the double play. he gets a running lead. suzuki doesn't even make a throw. >> gary: cahill doesn't really look. >> jim: he's 21. he's going to have to learn, maybe he's not going to. you'd like to think he's going to, as he gets more experience, realize you've got to make good base runners stop. >> gary: jones to short, runner will come home. play made by pennington for the out. jones will be credited with the rbi.
8:30 pm
>> jim: a break for cahill, because adam jones unable to hit the ball to the right side. you get the run in and the runner over. but as we've seen so many times, now they're having a meeting. how are we going to keep brian roberts from stealing third. he's already done that tonight. i can tell you how you keep him from stealing third, don't let him get to second. >> gary: that's the guaranteed answer. but he's already there, so now with the left-hander markakis up, pennington the shortstop will try and hold the runner. nick over the 300 mark. a five game hit streak now for markakis. markakis takes it for a strike.
8:31 pm
orioles with three runs in. that's not been enough for them of late. they've had three or fewer runs in a ballgame 12 times since the all-star break and have lost all of them. that will be popped up in the infield. kennedy is there. >> jim: brian roberts is going to be doubled off second. he thought there were two down. oh, my. roberts had already gotten to the plate on the pop-up. it ends up being a double play. watch roberts at second. >> jim: everybody knows except him. and usually you check with third, right here, they're all pointing. you can see cahill, he wants to get out of the inning. brian disappointed. he gets out of the inning because of the base running. taste like?
8:32 pm
8:33 pm
a miller lite. (announcer on call) ...he throws it across the field. he's got something! 30...40...50...he's got it! 40! he's got it! 20...10...he's got it! 5!...endzone! touch down! there are no flags on the field! it's a miracle! (announcer) that's what greatness tastes like. triple hops brewed. great pilsner taste. miller lite. taste greatness. >> gary: it happens and it doesn't make it any easier if you're the one it happens to. for brian roberts, just a miscount on the outs. the orioles do get the two runs to take the 3-2 lead. here is scott hairston, a home run, his 14th came in the
8:34 pm
fourth inning. hernandez, 0-1 delivery to him. this is the second ballgame in which hernandez has given up two homers against boston, two starts ago, pedroia and youkilis had home runs against him. two strikeouts. hairston, cust and suzuki due up. hernandez slider up high. a 1-2 count. hairston hitting at .245 on the season. >> jim: a pretty low pitch count. a good change-up. whatever that felt like, you want to bottle that change-up. they're all around 86 to 87, but this had such great depth and finish to it. this is what you want to try to
8:35 pm
recapture many, many times over. what that felt like coming out of your hand, because it was something. >> gary: his high was four, he's now at six. designated hitter, jack cust. he's walked and flied out. here at camden yards, cust just the .171 batting average coming into the ballgame in this ballpark. but he has had four home runs. here at orioles park at camden yards. ot tiñeñoñsñ eçpñcya÷lñ ÷tó even to left field. cya÷lñ ÷tó and that will bring
8:36 pm
moeller out to talk to hernandez. cust has had 10 of his home runs at home, seven of them on the road. hernandez knows he's facing a power hitter here. >> jim: and i think this conversation was probably, we already saw melvin mora swinging at 3-0. it's not out ngingrather broad at he won't plate. david hernandez will take advantage of it. >> gary: and a chopper down to second base, where roberts is playing in the outfield and gets it ere in time. two away in the 6th ckets sold game in the 2110 utah street
8:37 pm
section. but you can celebrate nick markakis, adam jones on august 30 and/or september 5. on those days, just $21, you get a reserved bleacher seat, a t- shirt. throughout in that power alley in right. between the two. suzuki has grounded out and flied out and will take the pitch up high for a ball. suzuki has hit well in this ballpark. he's never had a home run in this yard. two down and nobody on, trying to break the nine game win streak the a's have against them. and set themselves up for a chance to win the series in the ballgame tomorrow, ways day game.
8:38 pm
here's the 1-1 delivery on the way. you see the remaining schedule for these teams. the orioles have the second toughest schedule based on winning percentage of opponents and oakland not far behind with the fourth toughest. that one hit hard into left field, base hit. suzuki on with a two out single and his four game hit streak is now on the board. >> jim: he is a very aggressive hitter. he already has more home runs, three in the last six games, now seven games. you throw it in the middle of the plate, he's going to hack
8:39 pm
it. >> gary: now here is tommy everidge. everidge has struck out twice. two down. and he will foul that one off at the plate. everidge has to eye that left field side. >> jim: we saw him start the two run rally off of jeremy guthrie last night, is he hits the ball everywhere. he started with one out, just a nice line drive between first and second to start the second inning. that's the great thing about most ballparks now, but especially here at camden yards. you don't have to pull the ball to hit home runs. you can hit them out anywhere. how many times have we seen them take advantage of that wall, the short porch in right.
8:40 pm
the wall's only nine feet out there. >> gary: almost got away. good play by huff to go down and catch that. that could have changed the whole look of the inning. >> jim: you're one strike from getting everidge out. just get him out, go sit down. if you get out right here, you could probably pitch another inning. hand the ball to the back end of the orioles bullpen, hopefully with the lead. you can see a pretty good lead. suzuki runs well for a catcher. >> gary: that will be grounded towards brian roberts. he's got it. plenty of time to get it over and get the out. for all event, you can get great lease deals. i love it!
8:41 pm
i just want to know it's the right move. me? thirteen days in the future. you get a deal on the car you always wanted. scheduled maintenance is included, it's all good. what's the future like? you love your new jetta. and the suit? you like it? no...i love it!
8:42 pm
time to check in on news and notes from around the major league. did pedro martinez still have what it takes to pitch in the big leagues. we'll find out tomorrow. also vladimir guerrero hit his 400th home run last night. gary? >> gary: big night for colorado. tulowitzki, and they are right
8:43 pm
in the chase for the wild card. that is swung on and missed as the orioles go against trevor cahill, with the 1-0 lead. aubrey huff has struck out and flied out. grounded out rather. he is facing cahill. the pitch will be taken down low for a ball. >> jim: 44-22 under jim tracy after the managerial change. >> gary: they have the one game lead in the national league wild card race over the giants. >> jim: the nationals trying to make it nine in a row, though they trail 4-1 down in atlanta. >> gary: there's the tapper back to the mound. cahill underhanded flip to get the out. on sunday, the first 10,000 fans are going to receive a limited edition orioles bird stuffed toy, better not be oil
8:44 pm
in it, gather up your family and spend the afternoon at the yard. the web kins oriole bird. nolan reimold, reimold struck out last time up, had a single and scored, has a stolen base in the ballgame. melvin mora, ground ball out, rbi for the first run. the orioles got rbi's in the fifth on a single by roberts and a ground ball out by jones. two home runs on the other side for the a's. hairston and kennedy solo shots. bottom half of the sixth. cahill, the 0-2. cahill trying to end the three game losing strike that he is in and not add to the 11 losses that he's put up so far this
8:45 pm
season. >> jim: he's actually pitched pretty well. change-up and sinker, his best pitch, the slider. not very effective. right there. i had that in my repertoire. it's well intentioned until it gets out of your hand. >> gary: and there's that breaking ball and he got him. >> jim: i think a little change- up or something. he's showing him the slider, but at the end of the day it's been sinker, change-up, and he's had a good one. i mean really sells it well. you have great arm speed, that's what hitters are trying to speed. if you slow down the arm, they can pick that change-up up. >> gary: two down here in the sixth inning quickly. luke scott has grounded out twice in the ballgame. scott will take it, ball one.
8:46 pm
cahill, fourth most runs surrendered by american league pitchers. second most home runs. but not the way he's pitched so far tonight. that is inside. they want to check. the count will go to 2-0. only 21 years old, and has worked 132 innings on the year now. 2-0 delivery. hit hard right into the glove. everidge will go to the bag and get the out. a few years behind me, it seems i've got three times the bills i used to. and they're getting in the way of things i'd like to do. with the money bar, i can move my money around instantly, so when there's more bills than usual, it's no problem. and i use the wish list to put any extra money aside for anything i want. being in control of my money feels good. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc,
8:47 pm
a high-definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.
8:48 pm
 >> gary: time to bring you to speed. >> jim: the a's interest trying to rapidly rewind after getting 16 hits last night. a little different story tonight, six strikeouts, only one walk, he's thrown just about everything in his repertoire and done it well. right there rick kranitz saying, hey, nice job. he's got the lead going into the 7th. >> gary: 7th inning, sweeney will lead it off. 3-5-1 for the orioles, 2-5-0 for the a's. the a's have stranded four so far. good ballgame. at camden yards tonight, great to have you with us. the delivery will be fouled off
8:49 pm
the other way. as hernandez gets ahead of the count here, 0-2. 70% of lead- off batters retired on the season. for david hernandez, a good solid number in that department. that's the only lead-off man on in the game. inside and a one ball two strike count on ryan sweeney. >> gary: that is a real good place to start. getting that first guy out. batting averages go down tremendously, hundreds of points, when you're able to do that. >> gary: nick markakis will go back a couple of steps. and he's got it. orioles fans, when it comes to tickets, you deserve major league service, go to the official marketplace of the orioles. then the angels are in on
8:50 pm
friday, saturday, and monday. for the four game set coming up against the angels. one down, nobody on. here's ellis. matt albers up in the bullpen. >> jim: we are seeing a young pitcher, and david hernandez really pitched tonight. he was forced into saying, you know what, we're actually going have a game plan and try to stick with it. use all our pitches. throw a lot of strikes. gotten away with a couple of hanging curveballs. >> gary: ground ball to short, this time izturis has it. >> jim: it's one thing to talk about young pitchers being inexperienced, what happens is, in talking to brian matusz who now has two starts, he said, i learned more than i learned in the minor leagues in two starts
8:51 pm
up here, because this is the best. david hernandez, tonight he's shown me, i can take a little bit off my curveball, i can take a little off my change-up, i can add and subtract from my fastball. it's all about getting your innings. and feel comfortable. they've only got them three runs. your second half, gonzalez has been the best of them. that is in one game i guess where he gave up 10 earned runs. >> gary: pennington has flied out twice in the ballgame. hernandez, the two homers and a rajai davis double in the first inning the extra-base hits off him. that's going to be towards the gap in left center. pennington is on with a single. comes at two down here in the 7th and we'll turn the order over to kennedy at the top.
8:52 pm
>> jim: you have to remember the last at-bat. you didn't make a bad pitch. dave trembley is going to come out and make a pitching change. the last time kennedy went out and got that fastball down and away and homered to right center field. >> gary: there will be a nice hand here. david hernandez, 6 2/3 performance could be the winning pitcher in this game. ?
8:53 pm
8:54 pm
 >> gary: david hernandez wi hope the bullpen now can protect the lead. only two runs, six hits, 6 2/3 innings. >> jim: he did a real good job. it's been a little bit of a struggle, overused. and again, 10 earned runs over the last 3 1/3 innings. but when he's at his best, throws a lot of first pitch strikes. the numbers actually, either way, he's not pitching as well as he'd like. when he's pitching well, he'll sink the ball. let's see, again, this is a team already with 86 steals. let's see if this is a running situation for the a's, down by a run. >> gary: for albers, left- handers hitting .321 against
8:55 pm
him, right-handers .286. he faces kennedy, top of the order. he takes it for a strike. orioles up by one. top of the 7th inning. kennedy at the top of the order. throw down by -- it's not going to be in time. it is a stolen base. and so the potential tying run gets to second. >> jim: over the last 20 games, they have averaged just about six runs a game, a little bit more. part of it is stealing bases when they are presented to you. so 16 hits last night, but they still stole a couple of bases. didn't hit any home runs last night, but hit four on sunday. >> gary: everybody's running. it's only the second stolen base for pennington.
8:56 pm
and a monster cut right there taken by kennedy from your heels. >> jim: on a curveball. not a very good average. that's how difficult it is to hit when you get down in the count. >> gary: kennedy with runners in scoring position, .387, fourth in the league. the o's up by one. that one will be taken low and he stays off that one. >> jim: i actually think they could have a good chance of picking pennington off. izturis, of course mark belanger was one of the best of them. i wouldn't be surprised if they don't try to pick him off. because he started to sneak in, and pennington got the big lead. if you do the daylight, which
8:57 pm
is where you wait for the glove to open. >> gary: fouled off outside of first. you've got to give pennington credit for one thing, he's trying to get a secondary jump that's almost halfway to third base. >> jim: in case they hit it to markakis, the way he throws. reimold with a good arm in left. it's a great thing about being on second base. you can run a little bit. two outs, you're going on contact. >> gary: albers, inside with a slider. and a full count, 3-2. kennedy went after one bad pitch, but he's refused to bite on a couple of others. >> jim: the guy right behind him is red-hot, too.
8:58 pm
>> gary: kennedy has -- he takes it outside. and draws the walk after falling behind. so first and second with davis coming up. >> jim: that's disappointing for a number of reasons. you were ahead, and that is your go-ahead run. that's the difference. when he gets a hitter down, he takes advantage of it. he hadn't been doing that lately. >> gary: davis has double, and 1 for 3 in the ballgame. >> jim: that was the 10,000th double that the oakland a's have had. >> gary: since moving to oakland. that is taken by a strike by davis. he started out hitting .146 in
8:59 pm
his first 26 games. since then he's hit .336. he's been real problems for the orioles. he's had a grand slam. that will miss inside. >> jim: a high energy guy, but watch how relaxed that backhand is. how that hand slides up the bat, almost like he's playing the violin. not a lot of tension. >> gary: david hernandez hoping that albers gets the out here. that one is blooped foul outside of first base. runners at first and second. kennedy with a two out walk. two down. >> jim: he's a real good high
9:00 pm
ball hitter. beat the rangers the other night. >> gary: chokes up about an inch you saw on the bat. will punch it a little if he can. runners go and a ground ball right where roberts is standing. he will go over to first base and get the out. roberts moving over to the middle, able to protect it. some airlines charge your bag $15 dollars to ride in the bottom of the plane in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on! ( ding )
9:01 pm
 >> gary: summer night and a good ballgame under way here at camden yards. a 3-2 lead for the orioles. now up to the bullpen and for david hernandez looking to get out of a two game losing streak he happens to be in.
9:02 pm
>> jim: i think you'd take this kind of performance all year long and you'd take your chances. we've seen some nice adjustments. he threw a lot of strikes. had a veteran catcher chad moeller, he made him use all of his pitches. i'll tell you what, it is a battle of the bullpen. orioles in a good position to stop the losing streak. >> gary: what hernandez did of course, is he gave them a chance to have the guys pitching in the roles that you want them in. that ball will be handled in left, and a pitch and an out here. but it would be most helpful from the orioles perspective to maybe add a couple more runs. >> jim: we've seen a little bit of everything. we saw the rbi from melvin mora where he hit it down the right field -- the first-base line. then we saw brian roberts forget how many outs there
9:03 pm
were. again, yeah, i agree with you, tack on runs. >> gary: because this oakland team has been hitting. they are a hot offensive team. you don't want to risk that. that one's going to be played in right. boy, this hasn't taken long for a couple of outs, as chad moeller is retired. there are two down. credit cahill who came in here with a disastrous numbers over his last eight starts, pitching well. he ran into trouble in that fifth inning when the orioles got two runs and three hits. he's pretty much throttled the offense. izturis up, two down, nobody on. he has singled, then grounded out. now has a five game hit streak
9:04 pm
for izturis. i'm sure if anybody said, look, we're going to have izturis, he's going to play short, he's going to hit .240 for you, is that enough? yes, yes. done a great job in that nine slot. cahill gets the swinging strike. >> jim: i think most people would say he's too outspoken. >> gary: you have to quiet him down. very talkative. >> jim: he is a good guy but he doesn't have a lot to say. just there doing his job. >> gary: a breaking ball inside. they want to check at third. no, andy fletcher down there with the call. davis plays in and over. they give him the gap in right center. that will miss inside. cahill retired the side in order in the sixth inning, and has the first two down here in
9:05 pm
the 7th. foul ball outside of third. >> jim: the last time he was able to pimp this long was against the twins when they got him 16 runs. this is for a 21-year-old kid that's been batted around, 25 home runs. he's kept the ball in the ballpark. >> gary: and he hasn't walked anybody. and he will retire the side in order.
9:06 pm
9:07 pm
 >> jim: take a look at our geico game summary. the orioles score first. reimold with the base hit. then the rbi by melvin mora. scott hairston's 14th home run ties it up. then adam kennedy will drill one to right center. hernandez doesn't give up too many. hernandez leaves, 6 2/3 innings. albers after the walk gets davis to ground out and the orioles take a 3-2 lead into the top of the 8th inning with danys baez coming on to pitch. >> gary: adam kennedy with one of the two solo home runs. >> jim: tough week for danny baez. in toronto adam lind ended it
9:08 pm
with a walk off double. >> gary: baez will work here to three, four, five in the order, as hairston, scott hairston will lead it off. the pitch is a strike. suzuki will follow, as the a's bat here in the top half of the 8th inning. baez throwing hard in the outings. those two games in which he gave up that. >> jim: but is he sinking the ball? >> gary: the ones he didn't left the yard. >> jim: he's had that kind of year. he's been very good. a lot of people didn't even know if he'd pitch this year. came out and really pitched well the first two months. but he's given up the grand slam, hanley ramirez down in florida, the three run home run to mr. howard up in
9:09 pm
philadelphia. >> gary: that one melvin mora will charge, make the running scoop and a good play to get the out. hairston has got good speed, retired. one away in the eighth. >> gary: jack cust with one away. cust has drawn a walk, he's ground out and flied out. and the scoop of the ball on a pitch that is down and in. cust now at .230 with 16 home runs. cust has had a couple of hits in this series, in six at-bats.
9:10 pm
the fastball will miss inside. the orioles looking to end this long nine-game win streak the a's have against them, if they can hang on. fouled right straight back into the screen. just missed that one. >> jim: that's what jack cust lives for. 2-0 fastballs out over the plate. again, good movement there. look at that average there. 2-1, .412. >> gary: strike on the inside corner. >> jim: he was looking away and that ball hit the inside corner. i will have oh go over the batter's box and get a new bat.
9:11 pm
>> gary: so i just let it go. and he got him. baez buries one on him. >> jim: 97 and in the perfect spot. down and away. running down and away. talk about late movement. >> gary: apparently the baltimore sun reported that baez is one of the orioles that has cleared waivers. kind of surprised he cleared waivers. i would have thought a team might take a look at danny baez on a waiver wire. fastball is taken up high. >> jim: with alex rios, the white sox assuming close to $60 million of his contract, now, he's a pretty good player. the general manager, not having as good a year as we expected and we could use the money elsewhere. baez going to be a free agent,
9:12 pm
he could really help somebody. >> gary: absolutely. >> jim: when you talk to him he said, yeah, you know, from time to time if i throw too many splitters, but the tommy john problem, you can see right there. >> gary: izturis makes the play to first. a 1-2-3 inning. (announcer) after four hours, the dangers of driver fatigue increase by 200%. but with attention assist, your new e-class can actually detect drowsy driving behavior... and warn you. this is the new e-class. this is mercedes-benz. you know why i sell tools? tools are uncomplicated? nothing complicated about a pair of 10 inch hose clamp pliers. you know what's complicated? shipping. shipping's complicated. not really. with priority mail flat rate boxes from the postal service shipping is easy. if it fits, it ships anywhere in the country for a low flat rate. that's not complicated. come on.

9:14 pm
 >> gary: time to text in yo vote for the at&t player of the game. here are your candidates. brian roberts, and adam kennedy at the top. he's had a homer, a single, his 10th home run of the season. and we will get to see the major league debut in 09 at least as jay marshall will be coming up. made his major league debut back in 07, in relief appearances. just recalled from triple-a on sunday. >> jim: there is aaron cunningham. we've seen him briefly last night. he came in when they were leading 9-0. >> gary: cunningham in and hairston out. tremendous job done by th ar. trevor cahill gave up the three runs to the orioles on eight hits, he did not walk anybody
9:15 pm
and struck out three, and walks had been a big problem for him. brian roberts, two singles, a double and an rbi. he's also addetwo stolen bases in the ballgame. and will take that one inside. >> jim: so marshall with 50 appearances, the first 40 led the pacific coast league were just fabulous, since the al arbreak he really had struggled. e.r.a. of over 11 runs a game last 10 outinnings scoreless, but he has very deceptive nd up. >> gary: at one down the brian bidding for a four hit ballgame. he's had his 11th three hit game of the season. he'sad two four hit ballgames this year.
9:16 pm
>> jim: jim johnson up and getting loose. he has now, since george sherrill with the dodgers, he's the orioles closer. >> gary: fouled away. there's the oser fothe o's, j. roberts pops that one up, right field. not deep. ellis going out, and he's got it. roberts retired, one away here in the 8th inning. adam jones, then nick markakis top of the order for the o's here in the bottom half of the 8th inning. it will be everidge, sweeney and ellis in the order due up for oakland in the 9th.
9:17 pm
>> jim: as you mentioned, he'd like to have a little more significant lead. but just in case. >> gary: just in case. one down. adam jones, 0 for 3 in the ballgame and 0 for 7 in the series. >> jim: let's get number 20 out of the way. he says i'm not trying to swing any harder, but i think anybody, buck martinez certainly talked about it when you guys were on the road last week. >> gary: everidge will make the flip. jones retired, two down. >> jim: pretty good approach there. nice play by everidge because nobody's on. for jay marshall, sinker baller, you want ground balls. >> gary: marshall has the first two outs. now nick markakis coming up.
9:18 pm
two singles and hit into an unusual double play that came in the fifth inning when brian roberts forgot how many outs there were and got the second half of a double play against him at second base. nick at that .300 mark with 13 homers and 76 rbi's on the season. a chapper off the plate that will go foul. the orioles have not had a base runner on since the fifth inning on the single by brian roberts. that pitch is taken outside for a ball.
9:19 pm
nick markakis got jammed, foul tipped it, 2-2. >> jim: the weather not quite as hot, or humid as it was last night. >> gary: in the air to left center field. cunningham back, and makes the nice play, the defensive replacement lives up to his job. (announcer) what does greatness taste like? round of miller lite. (announcer on call) ...here it comes... watch this now... got it! my goodness! now you have seen it all. (announcer) that's what greatness tastes like. triple hops brewed. great pilsner taste.
9:20 pm
miller lite. taste greatness.
9:21 pm
 >> gary: orioles baseball o masn is brought to you by -- >> gary: the orioles three ou away from getting their first win against the team this year. felix pie has come into the ballgame. he will go into left field for reimold, and looking for the save, jim johnson. >> jim: he got one the other day. he said, it's a great feeling. you walk off the mound, shake hands with everybody, you get it done. that's what closing is all about. you talk to dennis eckersley, he said, well, fear motivated me. certainly worked because he's in the hall of fame. you don't want to undo what the offense and especially david hernandez tonight, matt albers
9:22 pm
has been able to do. >> gary: the pitch will be taken inside. everidge has struck out twice and grounded out. tommy everidge, with a .250 average. that one down to third is foul. for jim johnson this season, you see in the 45 games since taking over as the closer for george sherrill, 2-2 in save opportunities. >> jim: he certainly has the ability to do it. seems to me in talking to him, we're going to have to see, personality to go along with that. he relishes the challenge. >> gary: that's going to be a base hit into right field. just as we said of everidge, he'll go the other way, and he did. he's on. our attention assist ball of the game. >> jim: matt albers trying to protect a one run lead. one of their hotter hitters
9:23 pm
gets him to ground out. brian roberts covering the bag. now they're going to have a pinch runner. >> gary: bobby crosby will come on for everidge as the pinch runner at first base. crosby represents the potential tying run in the ninth inning. ryan sweeney 0-3 in the ballgame. johnson, that one fouled off. hit off his foot and a one strike count on ryan sweeney. looking for that double play ground ball here. albers came on and worked a third of an inning, gave up a walk. baez came on, he got the three outs in the 8th inning. trying to preserve the win for david hernandez. trevor cahill, the starter for oakland, 6-11 on the season. another one chopped foul. >> jim: of course sweeney is trying to look for a ball he
9:24 pm
can ground into right field and maybe get crosby all the way to third. it's one of the difficult things when you're pitching, you know you have a left-handed hitter, brian roberts is in a couple of steps. the last thing i want is the ball by him. i'd rather have one out than get the ball into right field. >> gary: inside to him. the orioles are 38-2 when they take a lead into the ninth inning or have a lead after the 8th. and here at home, eye ron he cannily, they've lost the only two in that category. >> jim: sweeney with a couple of doubles last night. >> gary: sweeney in with a four game hitting streak. >> jim: the thing jim johnson would like to use. he's a sinker baller. he's trying to get a ground
9:25 pm
ball, possibly turn the double play. >> gary: and a change-up and got him for the strikeout. >> jim: to me that's his best pitch because it looks like his fastball. we saw david hernandez turn some change-ups over, just threw them with great authority. this is about as good as it gets, especially after you establish in the mid 90s. great arm action. >> gary: ellis coming to the plate. he's 0 for 3 in the ballgame after the 5 for 5 that he had in the game last night. >> jim: do you hit-and-run here? >> gary: he was going to bunt for a base hit, if he meant it. he takes the strike. he's looking down to third here. runner at first and one out.
9:26 pm
bobby crosby on as the pinch runner. mora guarding the line at third, and huff holing the bag at first. a sweeping slider in there for a strike. >> jim: he just kind of turns his head and walks away. he thought this curveball was out of the strike zone. >> gary: nomar garciaparra in the on deck circle. he would be a pinch-hitter for pennington. johnson, the 0-2. that is outside. let's check in on the voting of the at&t player of the game. david hernandez looking for the win on top. you can still text in your
9:27 pm
vote. mark ellis with the 1-# count and the throw over to get crosby back to the bag. bobby crosby, not a base stealer. and being very careful, not to get picked off at first. >> jim: he had two home runs on sunday. >> gary: ground ball to third. mora charging. only play is going to be at first, as he got him. and there will be an argument on that one, i think. the first base coach, and here comes the manager geren. ellis made it a bang-bang play as melvin at third stumbled a bit trying to make the throw. >> jim: you got to understand how hard the a's run out balls. if you run it out, it's going to make it close. you talk about the stumbling.
9:28 pm
melvin back on his heels right there. took him about three steps. nice play by huff just to catch it. look at how hard, he's thinking, you know what, i have a chance to beat this out and almost does. >> jim: the potential tying run is on, melvin mora on a very close play, the o's get the very big out. and rick kranitz right out saying, okay, what are we going to do. of all the teams that, nomar garciaparra is going to come in and pinch-hit. 19 home runs against the orioles. next to tampa bay rays with 15, yankees with 14, down the list. >> gary: the potential tying run at second. he's 4 for 21 as a pinch- hitter, including three pinch- hit rbi's.
9:29 pm
two down. jim johnson after the save. and will take the slider outside for a ball. >> jim: he said when he came to ace land, he knew he wasn't going to play a whole lot. but a huge at-bat for him. and a huge at-bat for jim johnson. >> gary: in the air, center field, jones is there, and this one is in the book for the o's! as they have won it 3-2 over the a's and end the a's nine game win streak against baltimore. 3-8-1 for the o's, 2-7-0 for the a's. a fine performance and a win for david hernandez.
9:30 pm
9:31 pm
hi, everybody. the orioles, rick, are still having trouble scoring runs, but you know what, when you get a performance like david hernandez gave them, it doesn't matter. >> pretty decent defense tonight. a couple of base running blunders here and there. three different lane changes during the course of this game, the orioles still end up on top by one run. >> the orioles nap the three game losing streak and we're coming right back to talk about it. >> gary: there's your final line with the orioles winning it. let's check in with amber. >> well, able to put it together on a lot of fronts. the pitching from david hernandez, able to get some hits when you guys needed it early on, and just good to get a win against a team you probably felt like you could battle and get a win. >> some of the losing was start to wear on guys. we know that we're young and we know we're going to go through some lumps, and david hernandez pitched great. we came up with some timely
9:32 pm
hitting finally. and we were able to hang on. >> three hits for you tonight against cahill. just tell me what you saw from him tonight that you were able to make adjustments? >> well, we didn't go out and put a 10 spot up, but we scored enough. he's got a good sinker, he's got a good change-up. but we were able to manufacture some stuff. dave put on a hit-and-run and got a first to third, then we were able to use the ground ball to adam jones. we played some pretty good situational baseball. >> two stolen bases, very effective. the one miscue. >> yeah, of course, i mean it's inexcusable. i made a mistake, and you don't want it to happen very often, that's for sure. i think that's the first time in my career i've ever done that. a little embarrassing. >> david hernandez, we were talking about how good he was today. you said you just felt comfortable with him on the mound since he's come up.
9:33 pm
>> he had one bad outing i think, but other than that he's thrown strikes, he's got good stuff, he's got good velocity, and i do feel good with him on the mound. i feel like he's going to keep us right there in the game. >> amber, thank you very much. 3-8-1 for the o's, 2-7-0 for the a's. jim johnson has his fourth save. tomorrow wrap it up, jason berken on the mound. our coverage begins at 1:00 with "o's xtra" presented by ate at -- by at&t. thanks, everybody. this has been a masn presentation. blaip the orioles celebrating a win, they have snapped a three-
9:34 pm
game losing streak as the pitching took over tonight. hernandez, albers, baez and johnson hold down the athletics. hernandez only two runs and the orioles win by a final of 3-2 to even up the series now set up a rubber game in the finale tomorrow afternoon. welcome in, it's "o's xtra." jim hunter with rick dempsey. a lot of sub plots, as we just heard, brian had a very interesting night. he had a huge night at the plate. he had a couple of stolen bases and twice on the bases he was involved in outs on the bases. sometimes if you're a key player, the ball finds you. >> well, one of them was a blunder. earlier in the ballgame, you got to go back. swings the bat very good all night long. later on he hit the ball to the gap in right center field and he gets that one in there for his second hit of the ballgame. again, later on in the ballgame, too, in the fifth
9:35 pm
inning, his third hit of the ballgame. so swinging the bat was no problem with brian roberts tonight, he drives in that big run that puts the orioles up in that ballgame here. now the play at home plate, now brian roberts gets caught. you don't know whether or not he was told by the third base coach whether he was running on contact, but later on in the game there he is coming around third base, there was only two outs if he gets caught. brian roberts get caught not knowing how many outs there were. i know he probably is very 'em bauersed by that. >> because he went on the ground ball that adam jones hit to the shortstop, i've got to believe he's going on contact, because he saw the infield in and he didn't hesitate. either you're told you're going on contact regardless, or if it's hit in the field, you stay. >> most of the time you get that call 'the manager to the third base coach and he tells you, you're going on contact. brian with the speed he has and how quick he is off the dime.
9:36 pm
otherwise he would have watched the ball go through the infield and he would have scored had it gotten by the infielder. >> he had a big night at the plate. let's get a look at the game highlights, as the orioles got the lead in the bottom of the second. reimold is at third, that one hits the end of the bat and it goes in play. >> that's one of those rbi's that was meant to be. that's considered part, goes for an rbi. >> adam kennedy, he goes deep on david hernandez. >> kennedy has a big bat at times. he gives the oakland a's the lead on this home run. >> the orioles get the lead back. runners on the corners and he delivers. >> there's brian roberts, single, sinker on the inside corner. he finds the hole between first and second. moeller and the orioles take
9:37 pm
the lead for good. >> and this ends up being the game deciding run. ground ball to short by adam jones. two on and two out, protecting a one run lead. >> there's brian roberts up the middle shading it to the right. otherwise it goes into center field for a base hit. that stops the rally and davis at first base. >> that happened twice in the game to the athletics, putting the runners in motion. got a ground ball, got an out. sometimes it works for you, sometimes against you. eight base hits for the orioles, seven for oakland. hernandez has a tremendous bounce back start, cahill the loss. jim johnson his fourth save. brian roberts, a double and an rbi. let's get a look at the player of the game as voted on by the fans. i'm told now we're going
9:38 pm
somewhere else. manager david has just come in. -- manager dave trembley has just come inside. >> you know, both starting pitchers were good. but what counts is hernandez was better. and obviously we needed one of our starters to step up and give us a quality game and he did. just improved with his ability to locate and throw strikes and be aggressive with his fastball. had some good plays behind him. and we had an opportunity to set the bullpen up and albers came in and got the third one, and baez, baez lost the game on
9:39 pm
the road. i think it was in detroit. when he struck out four out of six, and i thought at that time, that was the best stuff he's had in about three weeks. tonight was equal. he had very, very good stuff, very good fastball. and that's the first time johnson has really been tested, i think, in a save situation. and his curveball, his curveball i thought was the difference. it made his fastball a little quicker. >> do you think hernandez needed a result like that after his last two starts? >> i think we all did. i don't think he was a lone ranger there. i think we all did. i read something today before i went out about trials and tribulations and the ability to
9:40 pm
deal with it. we certainly have been tested, and hernandez pitched a very good game. pitched a very, very, very good game. he was a little animated, too. i like that. he gave up the first home run and he knew he made a bad pitch. he kind of kicked himself in the butt. he's a real good competitor, a very good competitor. >> the second time around he's faced teams, detroit and boston, he had his trouble there. the first one was for you to see he made adjustments and he basically shut them down. >> that wasn't a very good weekend when we were out there. i think i had to take the starting pitcher out twice, early in the game.
9:41 pm
he pitches off his fastball, and, you know, i think what he did tonight was he was up and down with it. he's up a lot with his fastball. tonight i think he changed eye levels a lot more with it. he pitched down a lot more than i've seen him with his fastball. you know, this season. moeller did a nice job with him. but made some good plays in the field. melvin made a couple good ones. >> and it had been tough this year, but you'd lost nine in a row. >> they've certainly had our number. you know, we've hit a lot of line drives that have been caught and a lot of chances probably to put some more runs on the board.
9:42 pm
but it's been, i really feel like this is one that can get you through. it can kind of get you through. it's been -- there's been some tough times. this one will get you through, but they've had our number. they've got very, very good young starting pitching, as well. you know, and they're ground ball pitchers. i think that's the key. they're ground ball pitchers. all of their starters. >> yeah, we were on the other side of the coin with that with kansas city. you know, we had kansas city's number there for a pretty good stretch. i don't know why that happens. i'm glad we got this one so maybe they won't be, they were anxious to play us tonight. i don't blame them. they had our number. >> were you a little concerned early on the base running
9:43 pm
mistakes. >> there was one mistake, that was roberts, and roberts has already atoned for that, because i told him if that would have lost the game tonight, that would have probably put me over the edge. you guys probably would have heard me in here before i came in. but roberts being roberts told me, well, you can't accuse me of not hustling, i would have scored on that play if it had cropped in. when that happened i didn't think it was real funny. the water cooler just didn't quite do it for me going to the water cooler and the pink lemonade right now is more of a tonic than it is a soothing thing. but we stole the run on the contact play with reimold. he got a good jump and did it. we were trying to steal another one with roberts there because obviously we haven't exactly been the 27 yankees knocking guys in.
9:44 pm
and i know nick's a very good hitter, but we have two out rbi hits have been scarce. so we tried to steal another one. and that one didn't work out. >> what made you try a hit-and- run with your catcher on? >> well, one, i have got a lot of confidence in izturis, and, two, if you just look at the guy who was pitching, i'll be darned if we were going to hit into another double play there. that's not going to hp. three, you've got to just try and open it up and loosen it up a little bit for the guys hitting behind you. and if he swings an misses and moeller gets thrown out by 30 feet, then we're probably talking a different tone tonight. but izturis is a perfect guy to do it with, perfect. and he was looking for it.
9:45 pm
okay? >> the post-game comments of manager dave trembley as the orioles win 3-2 to set up a rubber game against oakland tomorrow afternoon. now, as promised, the at&t player of the game. david hernandez wins the votes of the fans. there was some oakland fans behind home plate, all four many them voted for him. the fans are hagging out with us, celebrating the orioles win. ?
9:46 pm
9:47 pm
well, chad moeller had a big night, as the orioles go on to win. chad had a base hit and a run scored in the fifth inning. that was the difference in the game. welcome back "o's xtra." we're going to head inside the orioles clubhouse. chad, we'd rather talk about your hit, but i first want it
9:48 pm
talk about david hernandez because i'm sure you're aware he was having some first and second inning problems coming into this start. what did you do with your game plan it calm him down? >> i just tried to make him as comfortable as possible. i thought he threw the ball great. he was able to command the fastball, the breaking ball was up a little bit. but for the most part, i just tried to not ask him to do too much. use the fastball a lot, his change-up was good. but didn't try to move around the zone too much and he was able to pound it. it was a great job by him. >> the last time you were here was quite a while ago, but you did have an opportunity in triple-a ball to see a lot of these guys that are in a major league uniform right now. your impressions of this starting staff now you're back here? >> a lot of talent. there's a ton of talent. they're going to be good. there's going to be learning. there's going to be days like this which are great, and there's going to be days that aren't, but everybody has to go
9:49 pm
through it. there's just a whole group of them, there will be some lumps. as long as they take something from each game, whether it's a plus or minus, they're going to gain something. i'm just thrilled for david today. that was a great game. >> well, chad, going into the game, obviously this is your first start since may 27th, and i'm curious about the trip that you took, because you did accept the assignment going back to triple-a, but he went and worked hard with these players, now you're back. you're kind of mentoring matt wieters. that's a role i know you take very seriously. >> no, absolutely, i'm honored that they think of me for that. it's something that they talked it me initially when i signed during the off-season and something i was ready to embrace, i'm glad the opportunity has now presented itself, and he's going to be good. he's going to be real good, and there's a lot of things to
9:50 pm
learn about catching and he was rushed to get here. he got here in a hurry, that's because he's so talented, but there's going to be some things to learn. we've talked about a couple things already, but i'm going to be open, if he has any questions at the same point, but it's when we're, anything i can do to help him get better quicker, i didn't necessarily always have those guys, and because i'm not trying to take his position by any means. that one's clear. i know my role here, there's no questions about that. i'm grateful to have this job and if that's the biggest thing they want me to do, i'm happy to do it. >> tell us about your hit. i see a guy who is red-hot at the plate? >> that's one of you. before the game all i could think about was just find a hole to swing at and the pitcher found the hole for me because that was going right at shortstop. i was happy to get a hit right off the bat in this game.
9:51 pm
it makes it a little easier when you come back. >> tomorrow in the box score that's a line drive to the gap. >> i do every time. >> chad, we appreciate the visit. welcome back. >> thank you guys. have a good night. >> that's chad moeller, what a good guy to have on this team. i liked what he said, he kept it simple. >> well, david had a pretty good night tonight. much better than his last two outings. his slider was working today, pretty good sharp break, it's something we didn't see back in detroit. he didn't have that. his ball just kind of was lifeless on that afternoon ballgame. he didn't have that jump on his fastballment tonight he had it back again. it was good to see. he worked it up in the zone when he had to and the slider down and away. he left one up, and you see hairston who puts the first one on the board for the a's with
9:52 pm
his home run. didn't let it bother him. he gave up one more home run. so two bad pitches on the night. he kept his team in there, gave them a chance to win. he did a pretty good job. the bullpen comes in and takes over and does a very good job and preserves this win for him. >> he only gave up two runs. the orioles scored exactly three runs and won in this game. albers came on and got the final out, just the two runs on six hits, he walked only one, and he struck out six. so david hernandez bounces back after a rough start in his last start. the orioles win by a final of 3- 2. it sets up the rubber game tomorrow afternoon as the a's and orioles will play a day game here. dealer: during the autobahn for all event,

9:55 pm
don't forget, on friday you can visit with brian bass, he will be at the wenties lakeside boulevard in owings mills from 11:00 am to noon. david hernandez gave the orioles an outstanding start tonight, he goes 6 2/3, two runs on six hits to pick up the win. >> got three pretty good pitches to go to tonight and i was able to keep the hitters off balance. >> yeah, i was very pleased. i was able to keep my pitch count down somewhat an pitched into the 7th inning and matty came in and got me out of the jam. >> strikeouts were up tonight. was there a reason? >> i guess being able to throw all three pitches at any time, is a helpful thing to be able to throw and get strikeouts.
9:56 pm
>> indicated for you that it's going well or not necessarily? >> it's a good start. i would like to take this on to my next start against anaheim. i've had some success against them, so hopefully i can do that again. >> it gives you a lot of confidence and you're able to go up against a team over and over and over and be able to do well against them. >> chad moeller is a veteran catcher. >> well, i worked with him some in triple-a and so he kind of knows what i can do and what kind of pitches i had and he called a very good game, and it's always nice to throw to him. >> he lean on a veteran catcher like that to go against major league hitters. you rely on their knowledge of some of the american league hitters? >> right, yeah, he's been around the game for a long time. i just trust him. i know what he's doing. he knows what the hitters are trying to do. i didn't really shake off too many pitches and went with what
9:57 pm
he called. he called a great game. >> david hernandez pitched a great game. how about this for using all of your bat. look at this rbi ground ball.
9:58 pm
9:59 pm
nick markakis had two m hits tonight. markakis inside the club hours, amber's talking with him about, hey, what about those adjustments? >> it's minor adjustments here and there. for the most part. it's nothing big. just locating pitches and allowing me and giving myself a chance to put the ball in play and not do too much. just for the most part up there looking, not for anything in particular, look for the balls pitched. >> everybody loves to have a good hitting streak going, but as far as an on base streak, getting on base in consecutive games, that's an important stat. can that show a guy may be able to get on maybe when things aren't going so well.
10:00 pm
>> that's the beauty of being able to walk in this game. any way you can get on to help score runs is definitely big, and just for the most part go up there and have good at-bats and try to get on any way you can. all of this line-up can hit in any situation, so any time you give yourself that option to get on base and score runs, it helps. >> so markakis now has a five game hitting streak. look who had markakis in the "o's xtra" challenge, i win one. i'm only down by seven now. cesar izturis one out of three. he did have a run scored. last time you beat me by a run when you shouldn't have. >> are you still crying about that? >> absolutely. let's look ahead to the rubber game tomorrow. >> back on the mound again. i'm sure a lot of the pressure is off jason berken, finally got that second win after nine
10:01 pm
consecutive losses. the e.r.a. is starting to drop a little bit. he's on the mound tomorrow. he's struggled ever since the orioles came into town. his looking for his fourth win of the season. let's go, jason berken. >> the orioles win by #-2. it sets up a rubber game tomorrow afternoon. they snap the 9-game losing trek to oakland. the streaks are falling all over the place. for more on the game turn on the radio. for rick, i'm jim, we'll see you tomorrow afternoon, daytime baseball at the ballpark.

10:04 pm
both of those guys played well, and led the rushers -- red shirts in a scrimmage that oagles o bee did not play in. three of those guys will have to carry the load now for virginia tech's back field. sort of hit is this for a team with steep expectations this season? >> it's huge. it puts them in a situation where they're going to have to work twice as hard now. i think they were a top 10 team. number 7 in the coach's pole had aspirations to be a national title contender. now possibly one of those kids that's never played in a college game before will start the season off against an alabama defense that is one of the best in theth country. that will indicate whether thea hoagies are for real uks and a national title contender. so they'll have to figure that position out quickly if they want to stay in the mix for that. >> tech has t a young quarterbak who a lot is is expected from. how much pressure on his shoulders? >> tyrod taylor made a lot of progress, sort of worked out the

kink and hits he had in his throwing motion. but last year he did the dirty work, got them out of a lot of jams and was a play maker while darren evans and some of the other guysl in the back field started to come along of the but they need taylor more now than ever to develop that passing game. some of those youngn wide receivers really started to come along in the second half of the season and in the orange bowl. the passing game will be even more critical while those young backs are developed. >> heather dinitch, thanks for coming on. >> thanks. >> to the links. tiger appears primed and ready for a run from a fifth pga championship. tigers last pga championship came in 2007 at southern hills in tulsa.
10:06 pm
his previous weekend he won the buick tiger. he's trying to tie the record for most career pga championship victories. woods holds the 72-hole tournament record. tiger shot 18 under when he won in 2000, and 2006. tom ronaldi has more from hazelteen. >> tiger, you often say you measure your year by major championships. given what's at stake for you this week? >> i'd like to get a major, there is no doubt about that. this golf course i've had some success on. and hopefully i can do one better. >> you've seemingly done it four times winning at least the event before each major championship. twice before this major coming in this week. what is the at adjustment you have to make this time? >> play better at the right ti

time. i haven't done that. >> what work feels better, the feeling of winning, or the feeling on the way home from the british? >> the plane flight home from the british is a lot longer. lot more time to think about it. but i only had six bad holes in a row. and if i clean that up, i still have a chance on the weekend. but i didn't do that. so you learn from your mistakes. there were some decisions in there i could have made better. you apply them, and i felt like i had great practice sessions before the buick. i played well there. i had even better practice sessions monday and tuesday at home before the bridgestone. >> finally last week you were put on the clock with the final

group. essentially you stuck up for a colleague, and you were critical of that decision. why? why? because they didn't influence the play. and i know that we were in the last group, but i think we separated ourselves. paddy and i that's what we were talking about is how much we liked that. and it was going to come down to one of us. unfortunately, he sped up, and made a couple of mistakes there. and that influenced the outcome of the tournament. you don't want to have that happen. you don't want guys calling, and the refs calling and changing games toward the end. that's what happened unfortunately. it did happen. and here we are. >> some pretty good groupings at this year's pga championship. most notably, you've got stewart cink, lewis glover, and angel cabrera. of those are the three major winners of the tiger woods will be grouped with rich beem and
10:09 pm
paddy harrington. defending champion tiger was a runner up at the pga championship. that tournament was also held at hazel ton. >> last season when tiger was recovering from knee surgery, it was paddy harrington who was the dominant player. he won the pga championship. then he decided he wasn't good enough. harrington decided to tinker and toy with his swing.i early returns said that was a bad idea. in the 12 months since his pga championship win, harrington missed ten cuts and fell from third to 17 in the world rankings. though he didn't win, he did have a three-stroke lead heading into sunday. perhaps a sign that the tinkering may have worked. >> it should improve my game.

and for the rest the next winter before i start to really have a groove in. the six months. but that doesn't mean that it doesn't mean i'm not capable of performing well enough without that move to win this week. >> i didn't win any majors for about 50 starts then i won one. i feel like i can do it every time. you know. it's a huge confidence builder. so it can only help.i after the open, you know, i paced myself pretty well, too. i only played one tournament and that was bridgestone. so i'm feeling fresh and ready to go, and eager to get out here and compete. i had a good position going in sunday in the masters in either

round. putted real bad at augusta on sunday. and hit the ball poorly on sunday at turnberry. so i wasn't able to get it done. and was disappointed by that. but still have quite a bit of the year left. hopefully i can get back in position and play well again. >> last pga championship at hazelteen, you've got to go back to 2002. tiger was runner up. he rallied down the stretch. and tiger finished one stroke behind beem for his only runner up finish at the event. >> michael vick may be gainfully employed by an nfl team by the end of this week. when asked about the quarterback on mike and mike this morning, dungy said he believes something will happen this week.
10:12 pm
>> i think he's changed as a person, and realizes what he did the lifestyle he had was detrimental to a lot of young people. where he is football wise. but i think you're getting a better person and very determined to come back and do well. most of coaches wanted to try to do something. but it's got to be an organizationizational decision. most of the people i'ven talked to have been positive, and feeling like someone deserves a second chance. i just felt like teams are interested. michael bounces teams off me. i think something's going to happen this week. >> last time we saw vick in the nfl was 2006. he started all 16 games for atlanta. his passing numbers below league average. but he was the first quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards.
10:13 pm
>> it's not a matter of if, it's when. and he'sy excited to go help a club win. >> h.e will not spill the beans? aone team that might be now?ested in him right >> there are a lot of teams that are looking forward toor him getting back. and he's working hard every day. vick needs the okay from roger goodell before here can play ina regular season game. for now he can play and participate in the preseason. but first he has to find a team. we asked michael smith what do you see happening? >> tony dungy is right on the mark. by the end of thee week, michael vick will have found a new home in the nfl. the reason is is. if it's going to work for the season, they have to get him into camp soon. they cant play him, sit him out and get the ball rolling on a new offense. so you ask where's he going to go? well, severalth teams are interested in him, but there is one perfect fit in my mine.
10:14 pm
the carolina panthers. you look at that team, they have an accomplished yet older quarterback in jake delhomme. they have a head coach with tenure and authority in john fox, and a stable ownership group in the richardson family, and a community that backs its team that's been successful over the years. he could go a lot of places, but i think the carolina panthers will be the new team for michael vick. >> coming up on espnews, pedro martinez, starts with the phillies tomorrow. only a black candidate, but also ford. the fords in tennessee were a famously and slightly flawed family. and as a result he had to answer for his family. what am i going to do? about the only thing he did say. he spent an enormous amount of time working in the eastern part of the state going to meetings like that had washed into where he would never be invited. his father, who likes to think that he was not as liberal as

the polls, but mostly on my own personal experience in all white settings. you know, obviously there is racism. believe me when i noticed in the end of the campaign. we have gone to ohio. find somebody. it wasn't hard. i am not a racist, but. and then you would want to say shot up. >>guest: something that is about to happen. >>host: and i still think. you may disagree. the election shows that race, i thought race may have even helped. it certainly didn't hurt him. and so what was the verdict? and obviously the country is ready to elect as a whole, but what did we learn? >>guest: if you are gone the famous former mayor of atlanta, to the king jr., one of those people who not only o not only f

loyalty, but also because he just didn't believe it, was famously critical. i have talked to many civil rights icons. i don't know him. but at the end he said i have to admit, one of the reasons i was so skeptical is because my experience in this country was one in which this country is not going to accept him. i had an experience where people were killed. i was still living that. i think for a lot of african-americans their is a group who is invested. for most african-americans it is just i live every day with little insults that tell me the country is not ready yet. i am followed in stores. denied loans when i know i can qualify. all these little insults, the way you are ignored. and there is a generation that says, it is a complete generational distinction because our kids aged just do not feel the same way. baker up in a more diverse

environment, but if you didn't, if you grew up at the at the tie when it was defined as denial they are skeptical. okay. what was bringing that on? now, i don't know -- i certainly don't think we were at the point where race doesn't matter. i don't think there is such a thing as opposed racial, opposed civil rights. i get a ton lashing shing early. it doesn't necessarily mean that is a bad thing. my basic understanding is that race is a positive. there is nothing wrong with being black. a lot of people never thought of it that way. people think about the drag of being a minority in this country. people think about the things you can't get to. it causes you to be examined all of your automatic assumptions. it causes all these politicians
10:21 pm
you thinking about running for office to be examined their automatic assumption. lots of polling going on for local candidates around the country trying to decide. as a result it becomes a case point. now, everyone does not have his guests gifts and is going to set his flaws are. i don't think you can complete erase race quite yet. maybe we would get to that point. maybe we never will. race will become a positive. i doubt i feel proud of myself. not that i'm phil basis. >>host: you could see race and still feel proud. i felt of the insulted. you know, in private you have different conversations. >>guest: you do. >>host: agreed to. >>guest: we do. >>host: of course. but it is not necessarily a racial conversation. we don't talk about race much.
10:22 pm
>>guest: that's the point. if you are a minority the majority of society is the norm. we know our lives. we just laugh about it a lot of the time or it's a part of the definition or the cultural difference. not a and they're after me. it's possible to talk about race. >>host: right. >>guest: as a result it's not necessarily a bad thing. it would be better if we did find a way to talk to each other about these things. >>host: right. but i still think the election results, to me, proved that there is of large group of white people who not only want to but vote for the guy whether he is -- they like barach obama.
10:23 pm
>>guest: welcome to our world. it never occurred to them that they could only vote for the black candidate. >>host: well, i guess i would say we all members of different groups and get treated as minorities at certain times. some of us sip what other people taste by the gallon. >>guest: that's right. >>host: being conservative allows me to sip what a lot of people taste. it's not hard. i am not a person. and there is a category before you get to me. there is a story you tell in the book. you're the only three black. >>guest: came up behind us and said this is not what i had in mind. we thought that was hilarious.
10:24 pm
literally. only in that washington establishment. it was white. we kind of stand out. we thought it was funny. not a bad thing. >>host: right. well, you know, in the -- after obama said he doesn't understand how much the country is changed. and what does that mean to you? >>guest: barack obama left are really incredible line. he didn't do it right at all. first, he said he is just an older man. then he is an old friend. finally he had to come out. jeremiah wright is actually a preacher. i've heard his sermons for years in churches i have been to. very interesting. we recognized. we laugh. we think it has to it.
10:25 pm
we take that. unfortunately in a political environment it really is not something. he was very little many times and was taken that way even more times. you know, i think that he is right that jeremiah wright was speaking from the old model, but he was speaking at for a reason. he is part of that cohort of older black politicians and cultural leaders who believe that you can't forget that there were a whole lot of people not spoken for, about, or to. and i was thinking about this yesterday or a couple days ago going through washington. everywhere in washington was caught up in the excitement of the inaugural. driving down the back street in northeast washington and saw a guy walking down the street thinking, i wonder if he is expected. teesix like he can barely find a job. he looks like he sleeps in a quarter of somebody else's
10:26 pm
apartment. this this mean anything to him except in the abstract? and that is what a lot of people, jeremiah wright among them, are speaking to. >>host: it does intersect. very fine high school in philadelphia. >>guest: a brilliant man. >>host: a ticket to higher education. most people you write about in the book, obama went to columbia. harvard. >>guest: education. >>host: amazing. and i was struck by a story i just heard. 1961 robert frost touchdown. and the night before the inaugural frost is at the white house and they have a chance. what does frosts a? and the advice he gives his be more irish than harvard. and what he meant to drive we can only imagine what he meant.
10:27 pm
if you have to identities it's something core and true. do you think that is a similar conflict? >>guest: here is a similar breakdown. jack kennedy came from a very privileged background. a long way away. it never happened. the think of who the kennedys were before he came along. in a similar way it's like somebody saying, be more get up. i don't know. oxford. the truth is he did not come from that. that is not what his background was. >>host: anthropologist. >>guest: he grew up with his grandparents and why. he didn't have any racial identity. he is smart enough to know what that wise. his way of speaking to that. we will be interesting. >>host: obama went to a very fancy prep school. is there anybody in the book who
10:28 pm
actually did have a get a background? >>guest: no, not in this generation. if you look back to the previous generation, yap. there was no where else for them to come from. if you look at this generation, it's an amazing ability to get education. there are people, however, like karen bass, speaker of the house. she came to politics light in her career. she came to it after being a community organizer because heard neighborhood had become a crack neighborhood. her worldview was not she was going to serve a short time. she wants someone else to take over the organization she left behind. that is her idea of passing on the bataan. there are a lot of members of congress he can look at, many of

them older. they came from places that were tough to break out of. but as far as they get regeneration many of them were much more privileged in part because some of them. >>host: for people in their generation, a bunch of career choices. you know, you go to harvard, egoi you go to stanford. you can go to goldman sachs. maybe you can go to be a community organizer or politics. what are the most popular options? >>guest: they all had the opportunities to do the things. i think in most cases they did choose public service. and i think that is a generational thing. when i go to college campuses i talk to a lot of people who talk about politics. they get that. that is what ring a bell with them.

so it's generational. i think that is something that is generational which is some ways a kind of bigger deal than the racial breakthrough. >>host: i was struck by the commitment to politics. at the college campus i also see the incredible interest in public service. i don't see the commitment to politics. >>guest: future america. and even this book sees politics as a way to get back to politics. they understand this generation, the next generation we are talking about where public service becomes the politics. still coming out. we don't know who all of them are yet. ..

he got elected in chicago not because of some huge -- but he also was able to reach across a lot of different minds and people like barack obama and said there appear well embarrassed and i thought i could do this. if i don't this limit myself to a base. >> host: and is that going across lines and getting away from liberals as well as in chicago? but one of the other groups? >> guest: cory booker who can speak in portuguese and spanish in one sentence and keep tomes

from a judea's some and in christianity and judaism on his desk, he tries to build coalitions. he is a one-man coalition builder and artur davis not the same constituency. if you are duval patrick you have to win in boston when i was a college student living in an amazing anti busing and racial unrest and yet not that long later they were willing to vote for him the senator from massachusetts was seen as a patrician and not very black at all. >> host: did they grow up in a mine in vermis. >> guest: duval patrick tells the story of leaving the south side of chicago and coming home for the first time in having him sister and say you talk like a white boy and he's devastated by this idea.
10:33 pm
but he grew up in a pretty actually i go back to it anybody can month he did but his breakthrough is getting away and into a mostly white environment in order to get a better education. >> host: and any other people you talk about describe obama as but the sense that the prices he went through, along identity foundation they went through? >> guest: the only person, he is biracial and that's a big reason that drove his identity crisis. people who are born of two black parents, when she was raising her two sons saying black and i'm proud was popular but she said mom im brown and his parents integrated and they were both ibm executives. they could have gone this house but were denied a chance so they sent someone in to pretend that they burned them and they got it. but by breaking down the
10:34 pm
barriers to get their son suburban education he is going wife so and i sent the had to emphasize who they were but a barack obama situation is unique because of his biracial background that is not comparable to other expenses. >> host: does and they talk about malcolm x? >> guest: you have to read his book to see how much he was a fan of malcolm x and the same story of clarence thomas. you had no idea that he was at holy cross in the seven days and that this was what you did it and believe and what you embrace that the time but you don't hear that from a younger group. you have to be about 50 in order for that too have revenue. after a while if you go a ticket number of malcolm x is a spike lee movie. >> host: and, of course, for a lot of white americans monolithic thing is very accessible. >> guest: except if you read the speech, he is a lot tougher
10:35 pm
than people give him credit for. >> host: remind us of that toughness and how filters and especially in the last couple years there was an economic toughness guess my martin luther king was an importer and making demands, he was asking for people to give things up. was and saying was all get along and we have chosen over the years to a race, there is a dispute about the statute, licencing that looks too radical and they wanted to do the features. >> borgnine and that's what people try to do with king to read if i would use about when he was tougher and probably more radical in his way them barack obama is now but the times demanded it. there was no voting rights act, there was no public accommodations law so he had to push lbj and others and on to make the changes and required a different tactic. >> host: now everyone wants to listen should read it "the breakthrough" bayh gwen ifill above another book called a stone of hope and this is a book
10:36 pm
about physiology and if compares a swedish sociologists to have the white liberal version of the civil rights which was if we educate people they will, around and it's very optimistic in nature and this book makes the point that martin luther king was a student and took a much larger view of human nature and it was if you it are indicated they will not come around and then with tradition teaches us things are much tougher and therefore you have to be much more aggressive than radical and in one of my earliest interviews with barack obama i asked him i think to the inspiration of king he had read a lot in gave me a long description of his very dark philosophy. which i was reminded them at the inauguration speech yesterday which was uplifting and all of that but had a dark corner to the.
10:37 pm
>> guest: i was reminded of it. my father was in the methodist minister from panama and he was in his mind is over its radical which scared of my mother to death and not fees going to be deported but he would wear -- tikis of the pulpit to. i still have some are paring he would speak about liberation theology. he would marched the civil rights marches. you speak about economic empowerment and this is the sort of thing he brought home every night to less and he also had as washing everything which is how i became a political junking the and the conventions. we did not get out mighty there but as a result that world view which you describe with king was that world view shaped by the man and shaved by they won't get it to us of the half two go in and grab it and that is not the same anymore. and partly because they pulled
10:38 pm
off with a red asking forum but when i do read king's letter from the birmingham jail which is my favorite writing of his that is very clear, is not in let us all get along things will bigoted speech. it's a letter about the things that we have to take because they won't give it to as an hero the company is scraps of paper while in prison. it was amazing but he wasn't at all saying it this is something which will happen on its own. >> host: more of what you said earlier you made a reference in our conversation to the ideal of america being the same as would to see every day. >> guest: is true of the other thing is rampant people folks who are making those demands, my parents being immigrants i think immigrants are very patriotic because they've chosen to be here and be americans ingested in time to them so they work harder and have a certain romanticism so
10:39 pm
even though my dad can hold two thoughts in his hand america is not fair two black people he can also say every verse to every line of america the beautiful and believe it was the same passion some of these could go together in the biggest problem in politics is we assume people can hold a spot in their head at a time but is this month accomplishment that are more complicated and therefore more interesting. >> host: let's use this as a segue to talk about you, you mentioned your parents are immigrants and obama's father was an immigrant and colin powell's a reference for parents. is my part of it is that immigrants have to work harder because there aren't chosen to do this. it's a certain sensibility and i love it in the inflation because the immigrant experience is how you accommodate these different places. because we are immigrants we almost always show of the outsiders even with phone racial
10:40 pm
code words. colin powell and i would tell you that as well as indians who were probably love that famine and patty written about with suspicion by american foreign black. who are you? what is their issue price and so you went to live as a kind of minority within a minority, which is something barack obama had to and because of that you break through it any push past that if you want to appear you learn how to exist in all of this difference circles here it is not unusual for me to be in a room with a majority of white people because i'm used to be of something else and you find a way to accommodated if it's something you wanted to. >> host: queue think we say your family is from barbados and panama. do think not having actual -- that's a stupid question, i was thinking and about to say and i will reveal this dependency, not
10:41 pm
having seven of slavery in your routes by as you do have it slavery in your rets. >> guest: you're making interesting point is this whole internal disputes among black immigrants including black africans and native-born americans with his are you to apply because that was part of that, if you are not the seventh of slaves we are they were just not pay the, they were being enslaved to reap the sugar cane and cotton. the name and, my family is not the name of a plantation owner in barbados. >> host: human to the sum of the slides into day will indicated successful black woman suffers and people wonder gwen ifill work said to pbs, she's written than they are times, washington post, what is there to complain about? >> guest: we are only human
10:42 pm
beings here. >> host: i asked that in a serious way that there is still our these racial elements. >> guest: and what to do is take into account into law. i don't actually completed, and testing knowledge it as a guide to life that people take it and complained. you know that things happen, the questions are raised about what to do. and there is something about whether seen as being fair to obama and then goes back to the idea of holding to toss in your head and is impossible to attend obama and said the press african-american president and is also possible to say you're in the white house now which is not happening must and barring going to ask him some hard questions. i have hard questions rooted in a different experience and there is nothing wrong with it and should be encouraging it and instead may think if you define yourself as black some house you
10:43 pm
compromise yourself and the question, of course, is wightman compromise in the years covering why men and a white house but that is of the next book. >> host: i want to ask about another identity to talk about for me which has to do with aspects of our profession and in some sense we're both journalists but another cents on the vincennes of the profession here and i'm an independent journalist and you, other repoire and interviewed her. in the the book you have to break a little of that now describe the process for you. >> guest: it is very hard to remain. you are right. on the one hand, and the other hand for someone to say and my editor at doubleday will try to get me to do this, tell me what you really think my problem is i'm so schooled to listen to another point of view that i have some trouble declaring this to be the truth must have any by

people who said it and is very much a reportorial book as a result and not you will find out what gwen ifill thinks of barack obama be carly because i don't know, i'm still waiting for him to do this job before i know what i think and i may never know but it is a new challenge to come up with a conclusion. you can say we to think. is it harder or easier, i don't know and for me is to be incredibly difficult because i feel if i decide what i think about something i automatically stop listening and then some planes i don't take into account the possibility there is a reasonable alternative point of view and as a result of the people i talk to don't press me. they don't want to know and so is in a reporter and i want to open up the possibility i can be persuaded. interviews will go that way. i can persuade you, i swear. i'm still working on it.
10:45 pm
i don't know what i am persuaded you to. >> host: and opinion journalists wakes up with an assumption and goes to bed with a conclusion where as reporters are in process and i'm just curious. >> guest: that's true for people who want to assume things about me famously during the run into the presidential debate there was this silly turf awful about whether i was writing a pro obama book and i realize that conclusion led to people who haven't seen it the book but i haven't finished writing but it is with people who didn't have an imagination that a black woman could write about someone else in my 30 years as a journalist was tromped any desire to make a conclusion before the story ended in. but people say what they want to say. >> host: i did want to use the last minute to talk about that episode. he became the soaring, rush limbaugh and others said you will be biased in your hosts in this debate and the walter

cronkite. it was to be the subject of that furious continent -- controversy for a while? >> guest: i use it but at the time i was presented by my little possy who do not let me see a lot of what was said in which was a good thing because afterward and said it my god i never would have done this because there's senes but it was helpful. people like rush limbaugh who is an entertainer and can say whatever he dislikes but did not a i mean and the people i thought i knew and should have it is a small effort to get it right and those of the people who i felt unfairly treated by the people who i did not know who were mean to me i didn't care and the vast majority in turned out for people who did know and work with me and who immediately sent this can't be sure and i felt vindicated by that. >> host: thank you, gwen ifill, author of a "the breakthrough: politics and race in the age of obama". also visible on your local pbs
